Pecos Wilderness Incursion

Encounter with motorcycles in the Pecos Wilderness

I would like to tell you about our experience on September 15, 2007, in the Pecos Wilderness, although many of you are already aware of this. Since this is such an example of blatant abuse of trails, I am copying here what was submitted to the Forest Service. The Travel Management people were also addressed.

"September 15 we were riding on horseback below Jicarita Peak, towards Ripley's Point. While we were still in the Wilderness and a few miles from the National Forest, we encountered 11 dirt bikers coming towards us. They claimed they were not aware of the boundary, although they seemed quite familiar with the area.

Most of the bikes were orange and the riders were adults.

I have attended your excellent presentations on Travel Management Planning, where at every meeting the question was raised: "How are you going to enforce keeping people away from closed roads?" The public was repeatedly assured that that would be manageable. Based on what I saw yesterday, I am not convinced you can."
