Here are three final opportunities for 2008:
*October 17, 18, 19, 2008 - Rio Guadalupe Campsite and River Clean-up*
*The place:* In the region between the Sierra Nacimientos and the Valles
Caldera, the Rio Cebolla joins the Rio de las Vacas to become the Rio
Guadalupe which flows down to the Jemez River south of the Jemez Springs.
The area is very popular for camping and fishing.
*The project: *Due to the popularity of the area, the Forest Service has its
hands full keeping up with the impacts that occur to the fragile riparian
zone along the rivers. We will clean up campsites, block off highly
impacted areas, lay out seed, and plant willows.
*Contact: *Michael Scialdone, "Scial", rioscial@gmail.com, 505-232-8756.
*October 24, 25, 26, 2008 - Cebolla Canyon Spring Restoration*
*The place: *Cebolla Canyon is southeast of Grants, NM. It bisects the
sandstone mesas that are east of the El Malpais National Monument. This is
a legacy project of the Albuquerque Wildlife Federation. They have been
working on this area for over 10 years with tremendous success.
*The project:* Part of the work that AWF has done has included restoration
of a significant spring in the upper reaches of the canyon. Where there was
barren dirt is now a flowing stream with cattails, ponds, and grasses. Come
see it for yourself. We will build structures to further the work that has
been done.
*Contact*: Gene Tatum, gtatum3@msn.com, 255-1960.
*November 8, 2008 - Placitas Open Space Trail Project and Anasazi Fields
Winery Conservation Gathering*
*The place: *Placitas Open Space is part of the ABQ Open Space system. It
is a little known gem out near the town with rolling badlands topography, a
piece of Las Huertas Creek, and amazing views of the north end of the
Sandia's.
*The project:* We will add to and reroute an old trail. This will complete
a loop trail, help control some erosion problems, and protect some cultural
/ archaeological sites. Bill Velasquez will lead the project. Bill is an
avid hiker and firm believer in being involved in the maintenance of trails.
*The celebration: *After the project, we will head to Anasazi Fields Winery
and celebrate a great year of Volunteer Service Projects. You are welcome
to join for the work project, the gathering at the winery, or both.
*Contact*: Bill Velasquez, bvelasquez@GARDNERZEMKE.com, to sign up for the
project. For more information of the gathering at Anasazi Fields Winery,
contact Michael Scialdone, "Scial", rioscial@gmail.com, 505-232-8756.
We have received this schedule of trail work parties from Phyllis Martinez of the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest. Please contact the appropriate party if you are interested in helping.
